The Evening Optimist Club of Saint Joseph donated a refrigerator to the Savannah High School’s Campus Cupboard program assisting families in the district with items essential for day-to-day life.

The Campus Cupboard and Closet is an outreach sponsored by the Savannah High School for students and families who are in need of a hand up. The cupboard strives to provide weekly meals, clothing, personal care items, beds, and other essentials that are needed by our students. Forms for participation in the Campus Cupboard program can be located online on the Savannah R-III District website.

The Evening Optimist Club of Saint Joseph was contacted by Dr. Robert Sigrist, principal at Savannah High School, after the Evening Optimist Club reached out to area schools through email towards the end of the Spring 2016 semester. The Evening Optimist Club explained in the email that their motto is a “friend of the youth” and the club was formed with children and their needs in mind.

Tina Cady, president of the Evening Optimist Club added that no request for assistance was “too big or too small.”

The Evening Optimist Club was created because a need was observed for a club that met outside of normal business hours, as many people that work a 9-5 job could not participate in the Saint Joseph Optimist Club. The Evening Optimist Club is comprised of members from all diverse backgrounds who have a passion for children, including (but not limited to) a banker, an attorney, sheriff’s deputies, business people, college students, etc. The club notes that their focus is to help provide children with the tools necessary to be successful.

They were chartered in February 2015 and has since been active in the Saint Joseph area by supplying hygiene products and clothes to the Noyes Home, donating city bus passes to the Saint Joseph St. Joseph School District for dispersion among those in the McKinney-Vento program, by adopting families at Christmastime, providing transportation and volunteering for Tiny Tot Town, supporting the Backpack Buddies program and holding fundraisers.

The Savannah R-III School District is overjoyed with the donation of a refrigerator to help the Campus Cupboard program fulfill the needs of area families. The school district looks forward to working with the Saint Joseph Evening Optimist Club in the future.
